In all three maintenance sections, most of the personnel work on shift so that maintenance can proceed continuously
throughout the 24 hours without recourse to abnormal and inconvenient overtime working. These maintenance staffs carry
out normal routine maintenance and repair work but some work, such as the unit major overhauls, during which the statutory
inspections are made, is carried out by supplementing the station staff with outside specialist contractor resources. In a
modern power station, a high standard of skill is required from the various grades of craftsmen.
The Planning Section is also the responsibility of the Maintenance Superintendent. The section is responsible for the preparation of Plant Major Overhaul and Statutory Inspection Programme. It also plans maintenance work in connection with "outages" and is concerned with the development and extension of existing preventative maintenance schemes with a view to keeping maintenance at a maximum and repair at a minimum. Laboratory The Station Chemist and his staff are responsible for routine coal sampling and the analysis of water, fuel and oils used on the Station. Their aim is to maintain high plant efficiency and availability by keeping plant corrosion to a minimum and cooling surfaces clean. In addition, they undertake chemical cleaning and the analysis of slags, deposits and metals after plant failures in order to determine the causes. A general advisory service is available together with a small photographic section. Administration The activities of the engineering departments require the support of an administrative function, the provision of which is the responsibility of the Station Administrative Officer. The functions he controls include wages and personnel records, budgets, accounts and fuel records, engineering clerical services, stores, general services, canteen and general office and committee services. Each administration section is supervised by a senior administrative assistant, the stores function by the Stores Supervisor and general services by the Station Warden. All materials, other than fuel, both in and out of the station are controlled through the Stores, where upwards of 18,000 different items are held in stock and replenished on a routine basis as usage occurs. All materials used within the Station are issued via the Stores. The General Services Section under the control of the Station Warden, provides the station with a variety of services, including security, fire-fighting, first aid, maintenance of station roads, drains, grounds and gardens, routine cleaning, transport and a general labouring service. |
